  2.  * Solomon's buildings and trade.

  4.  - It sometimes requires more wisdom and resolution to govern a
  5.  family in the fear of God, than to govern a kingdom with
  6.  reputation. The difficulty is increased, when a man has a
  7.  hinderance instead of a help meet in the wife of his bosom.
  8.  Solomon kept up the holy sacrifices, according to the law of
  9.  Moses. In vain had the altar been built, in vain had fire come
  10.  down from heaven, if sacrifices had not been constantly brought.
  11.  Spiritual sacrifices are required of us, which we are to bring
  12.  daily and weekly; it is good to be in a settled method of
  13.  devotion. When the service of the temple was put into good
  14.  order, it is said, The house of the Lord was perfected. The work
  15.  was the main matter, not the place; the temple was unfinished
  16.  till all this was done. Canaan was a rich country, and yet must
  17.  send to Ophir for gold. The Israelites were a wise people, but
  18.  must be beholden to the king of Tyre for men that had knowledge
  19.  of the seas. Grace, and not gold, is the best riches, and
  20.  acquaintance with God and his law, the best knowledge. Leaving
  21.  the children of this world to scramble for the toys of this
  22.  world, may we, as the children of God, lay up our treasure in
  23.  heaven, that where our treasure is, our hearts also may be.

  28.  #1-12 This history has been considered, #1Ki 10|; yet because
  29.  our Saviour has proposed it as an example in seeking after him,
  30.  #Mt 12:42|, we must not pass it over without observing, that
  31.  those who know the worth of true wisdom will grudge no pains or
  32.  cost to obtain it. The queen of Sheba put herself to a great
  33.  deal of trouble and expense to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and
  34.  yet, learning from him to serve God, and do her duty, she
  35.  thought herself well paid for her pains. Heavenly wisdom is that
  36.  pearl of great price, for which, if we part with all, we make a
  37.  good bargain.

  40.  #13-31 The imports here mentioned, would show that prosperity
  41.  drew the minds of Solomon and his subjects to the love of things
  42.  curious and uncommon, though useless in themselves. True wisdom
  43.  and happiness are always united together; but no such alliance
  44.  exists between wealth and the enjoyment of the things of this
  45.  life. Let us then acquaint ourselves with the Saviour, that we
  46.  may find rest for our souls. Here is Solomon reigning in wealth
  47.  and power, in ease and fulness, the like of which could never
  48.  since be found; for the most known of the great princes of the
  49.  earth were famed for their wars; whereas Solomon reigned forty
  50.  years in profound peace. The promise was fulfilled, that God
  51.  would give him riches and honour, such as no kings have had or
  52.  shall have. The lustre wherein he appeared, was typical of the
  53.  spiritual glory of the kingdom of the Messiah, and but a faint
  54.  representation of His throne, which is above every throne. Here
  55.  is Solomon dying, and leaving all his wealth and power to one
  56.  who he knew would be a fool! #Ec 2:18,19|. This was not only
  57.  vanity, but vexation of spirit. Neither power, wealth, nor
  58.  wisdom, can ward off or prepare for the stroke of death. But
  59.  thanks be to God who giveth the victory to the true believer,
  60.  even over this dreaded enemy, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
